How to choose your doctor for a penoplasty

How to choose your doctor for a penoplasty

The choice of doctor is decisive. It is not a question of title, but of knowledge of the anatomy and transparency about results.

Specialty matters less than you might think

For a hyaluronic acid penoplasty, the doctor must know the anatomy of the penis thoroughly. There is no need whatsoever to be a surgeon: a urologist, a dermatologist — who has a thorough knowledge of the external genitalia — or a plastic surgeon can all perform this procedure. What matters is therefore not the title of the specialty, but genuine command of this particular anatomy and concrete experience of the procedure. A practitioner unfamiliar with the area, whatever his title, does not offer the same assurances as a doctor who treats it regularly.

The questions to ask in consultation

At the first consultation, ask to see a substantial number of before/after photographs. The doctor should be able to demonstrate a certain volume of patients treated and regular follow-up. These two elements — a meaningful body of before/after images and an active caseload of patients under follow-up — are the best indicators of real experience. A conscientious practitioner has no difficulty presenting them; reluctance on this point should, conversely, put you on your guard.

Ask to see plenty of before/after images: it is the best indicator of experience.

Why every case is a challenge

One clarification is needed about these before/after images: they are never a copy-and-paste. There is very considerable diversity in anatomy, which makes every procedure a challenge, adapted to each patient's anatomical and physical parameters. Length, girth, skin quality, whether or not he is circumcised, the shape of the glans: every penis is different, and a good doctor knows it. It is precisely this ability to adapt the procedure to each situation — rather than applying a single formula — that marks out an experienced practitioner.

Watching out for warning signs

Conversely, certain signals should raise the alarm: a doctor who proposes to settle everything by teleconsultation, without examination; who advertises an abnormally low price; who remains evasive about the product used or about his experience. Penoplasty is a technical procedure in which anatomy, product and rigour matter at every stage. Taking the time to choose your doctor carefully is no superfluous precaution: it is what best stacks the odds in favour of a controlled and safe result.
