Medical penoplasty: separating fact from misconception

Medical penoplasty: separating fact from misconception

Medical penoplasty is surrounded by sometimes unrealistic expectations and persistent myths. Distinguishing what it can offer from what it cannot is the first purpose of a candid consultation.

“It is only for cases of micropenis”

False. Cases of micropenis are extremely rare and do fall within the surgical field. The vast majority of requests come from men of normal anatomy who wish to gain girth or flaccid length — a matter of self-confidence rather than medical necessity.

“The lengthening is dramatic

This is the most common misconception, and the most important to correct. Medical penoplasty projects the penis forwards when flaccid, which increases its apparent length in measured proportions. It does not, however, lengthen the penis when erect.

This must be made clear from the consultation onwards. To promise otherwise would be dishonest.

The studies are unanimous: where sensation is concerned, girth and thickness matter more than length.

“One injection and it's done”

No. The approach is gradual: it proceeds in stages, with a result that is built up and maintained over time. That is precisely what sets it apart from any logic of an immediate “dramatic result” — a register to which responsible medicine does not subscribe.

The real purpose of the consultation

Behind an aesthetic request there sometimes lies something else: anxiety, an unrealistic expectation, a difficulty the procedure would not resolve. The doctor's role is to listen, to assess, and sometimes to say no. It is this candour that protects the patient.

This article is informative and educational in purpose. It constitutes neither a promise of results nor personalised medical advice. Only a consultation can assess an individual situation.
